In 2007, Emmanuel Uduaghan successfully contested and was elected as the Governor of Delta State on the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP). A rerun election was subsequently held on January 6, 2011, which he again won convincingly, securing his mandate to continue as governor. He was re-elected for a second full term in the general elections of April 26, 2011, and served until May 29, 2015, completing two full terms as the chief executive of Delta State.
