Early Life and Background

Michael Rubens Bloomberg was born on February 14, 1942, in Brighton, Massachusetts, a neighborhood of Boston, to Jewish parents William Henry Bloomberg (1906–1963) and Charlotte Rubens Bloomberg (1909–2011). His father, William, was a bookkeeper for a dairy company and later a real estate agent, having been born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, to Russian immigrant parents. His mother, Charlotte, was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to an affluent Russian-Jewish family. Michael Bloomberg spent his early childhood in Allston, Massachusetts, before his family moved to Medford, Massachusetts, where he lived for the remainder of his youth. Education

Bloomberg pursued higher education with notable dedication. He attended Johns Hopkins University, where he worked as a parking lot attendant and took out loans to pay for his tuition. Michael Bloomberg began his professional career in 1966 at Salomon Brothers, a prominent Wall Street investment bank. He became a general partner at Salomon Brothers in 1972. However, in 1981, Salomon Brothers was acquired by Phibro Corporation. Bloomberg was subsequently laid off, receiving a $10 million severance package.

With this capital, in October 1981, he co-founded Innovative Market Systems, which was later renamed Bloomberg L.P. His vision was to create a system that could provide real-time financial market data and analytics to Wall Street firms, a service that was revolutionary at the time. The company's flagship product, the Bloomberg Terminal, quickly became indispensable for financial professionals worldwide.
