Born on January 22, 1950, in Amaokwe Item, Bende Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria, Theodore Ahamefule Orji's early life was rooted in the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people. Theodore Orji commenced his primary education at St. Michael's Primary School, Umuahia, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. Career

Upon graduating from the University of Ibadan, Theodore Orji fulfilled his mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program in Sokoto State, Northern Nigeria. He joined the civil service of the then Imo State (now Abia State) in 1978, serving in various capacities. Notably, he worked in the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Lands and Survey, gaining diverse experience in public administration and policy implementation. His career trajectory saw him move to the Federal Civil Service, where he served in the Nigerian Security Organization (NSO), which later evolved into the Department of State Services (DSS). After completing his tenure as governor, he successfully contested for the Abia Central Senatorial District seat in the Nigerian Senate in 2015, also under the PDP platform, serving a single term until 2019.

In the health sector, his administration established the Abia State University Teaching Hospital in Aba, significantly boosting medical education and healthcare delivery in the commercial city. He also initiated various road construction and rehabilitation projects across the state, aiming to improve connectivity and facilitate economic activities. Recognizing the pervasive challenge of insecurity, particularly kidnapping, he launched 'Operation Umuahia' and 'Operation Aba' to combat crime, which led to a notable reduction in criminal activities during his tenure.
