Early Life and Background

Cosmas Maduka was born on December 24, 1960, in Nnewi, a prominent commercial city in Anambra State, Nigeria. His early life was marked by considerable hardship and adversity. At the tender age of four, he tragically lost his father, leaving his mother to raise him and his siblings. This profound loss thrust the family into severe financial distress. Consequently, Maduka's formal education was abruptly cut short; he dropped out of primary school in elementary three, unable to complete even his basic education due to the family's dire economic circumstances. To help support his mother, he began hawking akara (bean cakes) on the streets of Nnewi.

At the age of seven, a pivotal moment occurred in his life when he was sent to Lagos to live with his maternal uncle and serve as an apprentice. His uncle was engaged in the business of selling automobile spare parts. During his seven-year apprenticeship, Maduka diligently learned the intricacies of the automotive parts trade. This period was crucial in shaping his understanding of commerce and instilling in him a strong work ethic, despite the challenging conditions and the minimal remuneration he received, which was reportedly just 200 naira at the end of his apprenticeship.

Education

Cosmas Maduka's entrepreneurial journey officially began after his apprenticeship with his uncle. With the 200 naira he received as his settlement, he attempted to start his own business, which unfortunately failed. Undeterred, he joined forces with his elder brother to establish a new venture called Maduka Brothers, specializing in automotive spare parts. However, differences in business philosophy and operational strategies led to the eventual dissolution of this partnership.

In 1977, at the age of 17, Cosmas Maduka founded Coscharis Motor Limited. The name 'Coscharis' is a portmanteau derived from his first name, Cosmas, and his wife's first name, Charity, symbolizing the partnership and support that underpinned his early efforts. Starting with a modest capital, Coscharis Motor Limited initially focused on the importation and distribution of various automobile spare parts. Through sheer determination, astute business decisions, and a commitment to quality and customer service, the company steadily grew.

Over the decades, Coscharis Group diversified significantly, evolving into a major conglomerate with interests spanning multiple sectors. The group became the sole authorized distributor for several prestigious international automotive brands in Nigeria, including BMW, Ford, Rolls-Royce, Land Rover, and Renault. Beyond vehicle sales, Coscharis expanded into local assembly operations, notably pioneering the local assembly of Ford vehicles in Nigeria, a significant step towards industrialization and job creation within the country.

Beyond the automotive sector, Coscharis Group established a strong presence in agriculture, particularly through Coscharis Farms, which became a leading player in large-scale rice production in Nigeria, aligning with the national agenda for food security. The group also ventured into Information and Communications Technology (ICT), medical equipment, and the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector with Coscharis Beverages, producing popular brands like Bigi drinks and Pure Bliss water. Maduka also served as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of Access Bank Plc. from 2000 to 2012, and as a Board Member of the Nigerian Export-Import Bank (NEXIM) from 2007.
