The legal challenges to his election continued, and in March 2006, the Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu nullified his election, declaring Mr. Peter Obi of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the rightful winner of the 2003 gubernatorial election. Following his gubernatorial tenure, Ngige remained active in politics. He later joined the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), which subsequently merged to form the All Progressives Congress (APC). In 2011, he was elected to represent Anambra Central Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate.
