Ibrahim Geidam was born on June 15, 1956, in Gaidam town, located in the present-day Yobe State, Nigeria. Career

Ibrahim Geidam's career in public service began long before his foray into elective politics. He started as a clerk in the Borno State Ministry of Education in 1974, even before completing his secondary education, showcasing an early entry into the civil service. After his diploma, he held various accounting and administrative positions within the Borno State Civil Service, which at the time included parts of present-day Yobe State. With the creation of Yobe State in 1991, Geidam transferred his services to the new state. He steadily rose through the ranks, serving as an Accountant in the Directorate of Foods, Roads and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI), and later as an Assistant Director of Finance and Supplies in the Yobe State Ministry of Education. His expertise in financial management saw him become the Director of Finance and Supplies in the Yobe State Ministry of Agriculture. He eventually attained the prestigious position of Permanent Secretary in the Yobe State Ministry of Transport and Energy, a role that exposed him to high-level policy formulation and implementation.

His political career began in 2004 when he was appointed Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Yobe State. Later that same year, he was moved to the more critical portfolio of Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development, a position he held until 2007. In April 2007, Geidam was elected as the Deputy Governor of Yobe State on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), serving alongside Governor Mamman Bello Ali. His tenure as Deputy Governor was abruptly transformed when, following the tragic death of Governor Mamman Bello Ali on January 26, 2009, Geidam was sworn in as the Governor of Yobe State on January 27, 2009, in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution. He subsequently won the governorship elections in 2011 and 2015, serving three full terms and becoming one of Nigeria's longest-serving state governors. During his governorship, the ANPP merged with other opposition parties to form the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, making him a foundational figure in the new ruling party. After completing his maximum two elective terms as governor, he successfully contested for the Yobe East Senatorial District seat in the 2019 general elections and was sworn in as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on June 11, 2019, a position he continues to hold.
