Perhaps his most challenging national role came in June 2020 when he was appointed the Chairman of the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the APC. This appointment followed the dissolution of the Adams Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee amidst a deep-seated crisis within the party. Buni's mandate was to reconcile aggrieved members, conduct a comprehensive membership revalidation and registration exercise, and organize a national convention to elect new party leaders. He successfully navigated this complex and often contentious period, overseeing the resolution of numerous internal disputes, the conduct of ward, local government, and state congresses, and attracting high-profile defections of opposition figures to the APC. He eventually handed over the leadership of the party in March 2022 after successfully organizing the national convention. In March 2023, Mai Mala Buni was re-elected for a second term as the Governor of Yobe State.
