Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike was born on December 13, 1967, in Rumuepirikom, a community located within the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. He hails from the Ikwerre ethnic group, a significant indigenous group in the Niger Delta region. His parents were Reverend Nlemanya Wike and Mama Nwo-Akuru Wike. Growing up in Rumuepirikom, Wike's early life was rooted in the communal traditions and societal values prevalent in his native area. Nyesom Wike's educational journey began at the Government Primary School in Rumuepirikom, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. Following his primary education, he proceeded to Eneka Community Secondary School, Eneka, in Rivers State, for his secondary education, successfully completing it and earning his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Career

His political career commenced at the local government level, where he served two consecutive terms as the Executive Chairman of the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area, a significant and populous local government in Rivers State. He held this position from 1999 to 2002 for his first term, and from 2002 to 2006 for his second term. During his tenure as local government chairman, Wike was also actively involved in the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), serving as its Deputy National President before eventually becoming the National President of ALGON from 2004 to 2007. His influence expanded to the state level when he was appointed as the Chief of Staff to the then-Governor of Rivers State, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, a position he held from 2007 to 2011. In 2011, Wike's political career reached the federal stage when he was appointed as the Minister of State for Education by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. He was re-elected for a second term in 2019, serving until 2023. As Governor, Wike became renowned for his aggressive pursuit of infrastructural development across Rivers State. Following the end of his two terms as Governor, Nyesom Wike was appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in August 2023, making him the first southerner to hold this significant position in recent history.
