Early Life and Background

Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori was born on June 19, 1963, in Osubi, a vibrant community within the Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, Nigeria. His roots are firmly planted in the rich cultural heritage of the Urhobo people, known for their industriousness and strong community values. Growing up in Osubi, Oborevwori was exposed early to the dynamics of community leadership and the importance of collective progress. His formative years instilled in him a profound sense of responsibility towards his people and a keen understanding of the challenges facing grassroots communities. He is the son of Chief Samuel Oborevwori and Mrs. Esther Oborevwori, who provided a solid foundation for his upbringing.

Education

Oborevwori's educational journey began at Osubi Primary School, where he received his foundational education. He then proceeded to Odogon Secondary Modern School in Effurun, where he continued his secondary education. He later attended Oleh Secondary School, completing his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). Demonstrating a strong desire for higher learning, he pursued and earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Political Science from Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, graduating in 2004. Not content with this achievement, he furthered his academic pursuits, obtaining a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Political Science from Delta State University, Abraka, in 2010. His commitment to intellectual growth continued as he later enrolled for an Executive Master of Arts in Public Administration from the University of Benin in 2017. At the time of his gubernatorial campaign, he was also a doctoral candidate at the University of Benin, pursuing a Ph.D. in Political Science, showcasing his lifelong dedication to academic excellence and continuous self-improvement.

Career

Sheriff Oborevwori's political career is characterized by a steady and strategic ascent, beginning at the local government level and culminating in the governorship of Delta State. His journey into public service commenced in 1996 when he was elected as a Councillor representing Osubi Ward in the Okpe Local Government Area. During the same period, he also served as the Chairman of Osubi Community from 1996 to 2003, demonstrating his early leadership capabilities and commitment to grassroots development.

His administrative experience expanded significantly with his appointments as Special Assistant to two former governors of Delta State. He served as a Special Assistant to Governor James Ibori in 1999 and later to Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan in 2007. In 2007, he also took on the role of State Coordinator for Technical Education, contributing to the development of vocational skills within the state. These early roles provided him with invaluable insights into state governance and policy implementation.

In 2015, Oborevwori successfully contested and was elected as the representative for the Okpe Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly. His legislative prowess and leadership qualities quickly became evident, leading to his election as the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly on May 11, 2017. He held this prestigious position for an unprecedented six years, becoming the longest-serving Speaker in the history of the Delta State Legislature. He emerged victorious in the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election, securing a decisive mandate from the people of Delta State. On May 29, 2023, he was sworn in as the Executive Governor of Delta State, succeeding Senator Ifeanyi Okowa.

Sheriff Oborevwori is happily married to Mrs. Tobore Oborevwori, who serves as the First Lady of Delta State. Their union is blessed with children.
